Safe haven for startups

Prodock

assignment
Create THE place for startups in the ‘making industry’ in the Western Port area where they can develop, test and launch their innovative products.
results

An ultra flexible incubator in the Port of Amsterdam.

Short- and long-term flexibility and multiple users within a building.

our approach
At the strategic level, working with Urban Retail, we further elaborated the ambition and objectives of the Port of Amsterdam in a clear proposition and positioning in which both the actual physical location and the development of a community for cross-fertilization and innovation are central.

Spatially, we developed a flexible interior design concept for the building on Moselhavenweg. The concept consists of two parts: the shell of the building as a "raincoat" with the facilities as offices, and workspaces as flexible boxes below. Through this box-in-box concept, custom spaces can be developed from the activities of the startups and accommodate many different types of startups.
A visible clustering of all technical installations, like an aorta through the whole building.

The Aorta
As part of the concept, we created a so-called aorta throughout the building. A visible bundling of all technology such as electricity, gas, water, data and air handling to which spaces can be connected plug & play. The separation between the hall and the offices is made of glass to create a strong connection to the production areas and make them visible and experienceable for visitors.
